I’m reading through the book of Deuteronomy right now and as I was reading through chapter 31, I noticed some thing I had not realized before.
Joshua 1:9 has been my core verse for my brand. It says “have I not commanded you? be strong and courageous; do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.“
Today for the first time, I noticed that Moses, whose place he was getting ready to take, said that to him first.
Joshua had been by Moses‘s side for 40 years.
It was easy to see why Joshua might not have felt that way, after all, Moses had been the only leader these people had known.
It had to be intimidating to be chosen as his successor.
But in verse 31:23 in Deuteronomy, the first time God himself tells him that, he says “I myself will be with you“
I don’t know about you, but if God spoke directly to me to say that himself, it would give me much comfort and make it a lot easier to feel that way.
Here’s the thing, there are promises spanning from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament telling us that he will be with us.
Joshua wasn’t just being encouraged, he was being prepared.
And I can’t help but think that there is a connection to that and where we are with this world today. You can turn on the TV or get on social media and it doesn’t take long to start to fear.
“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid”
It’s not a suggestion. It’s a command.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I kept coming back to this verse for my brand.
I think God kept bringing me back to this verse as a reminder to me.
And I think he’s using it to remind you.
